Why Moms Should Take A Field Trip Too

By now, your back-to-school schedule is in full swing. You’re probably already used to the standard head-spinning schedule of sports practices, extra-curriculars, and playdates. But while planning for your kids next school activity, why not schedule one of your own?

Here at Nature’s Touch, we’re encouraging all moms (and dads too!) to take an hour break from the busy school season and take a “field trip” to our office. While a regular massage is always divine, we also have many other treatments that require about the same amount of time and provide a deeper level of  relaxation.

Check out these treatments to pamper yourself:

Bamboo Infusion Massage

Bamboo Infusion Massage is a unique method of deep tissue massage. Using heated bamboo to roll and knead tissue, this treatment creates an extreme sensation of relaxation. The smooth edges of the bamboo sticks allow for more penetrating maneuvers to work through all angles of your aches and pains. Many clients report that the benefits of this type of treatment last even longer than regular deep tissue massage. How wonderful does that sound!

Hot Stone Massage

This treatment is performed with the application of smooth basalt lava stones that have been heated to just the right temperature needed to melt your tension away. Stones are placed in areas that generally hold tension such as the back, and then oiled stones are used in flowing strokes to relax the body. This type of treatment is warm and cozy and great for warming up as the seasons begin to change.

Steam Tent Therapy

As the weather starts to cool down, you may be finding yourself more prone to catching colds and getting sick. And as a busy parent, there is no time for that. The perfect way to give your immune system a boost and warm up from the chilly weather is with a session in our steam tent. The steam tent is like a relaxing sauna that helps the body to sweat out toxins. As it heats the body, it acts as an artificial fever that kills off unwanted invaders and puts your body into healing-mode. Many people who incorporate regular steam tent sessions into their life notice significant improvement in congestion, headaches and difficulty sleeping.

Rain Bath Ceremony

This hundreds-of-years-old sacred ceremony bathes you in warm stones, cool stones and essential oils. This ancient healing treatment is a very gentle method of alleviating stress and anxiety, helping to restore balance to the body’s chemistry. Warm stones relax and calm. Essential oils are dripped onto the body to ground, re-balance and soothe. Cool stones revitalize the body, mind and spirit to reawaken to a new self.

Facial Toning Massage

Face Toning Massage is a stimulating, vigorous, luxurious, safe and effective method of treating the problem of sluggish, aging and environmentally damaged skin. This method will retrain your facial muscles by firming and lifting them, thereby tightening and toning the skin, especially around the eyes and mouth to create a youth flow. Facial massage is also relaxing, which promotes stress reduction. Clients experience enhanced muscle tone and noticeable improvements to their skin, face and neck with the very first treatment. You’ll absolutely love how your skin and muscles look after a series. Many clients look like they lost five to 10 years off their faces, and are ecstatic.

5 Reasons To Get A Massage This Summer

Aside from feeling great, there are many benefits to massage therapy that can improve your overall health and well-being. During the summer months, we find that people generally feel better and in turn, forgo their regular appointments. But what people tend to forget is that maintaining your health is a year-round effort. To prove it, here are five reasons why you should get a massage this summer:

  1. Reduced Swelling – We are all too familiar with disappearing ankles and sausage fingers during the hot summer months. This swelling occurs when excess fluid and metabolic waste build up in the body. In the heat, blood vessels expand allowing fluid to rush to the surrounding tissue. The gentle pressure and deep strokes from massage encourages oxygen and nutrients back in our cells to restore the tissue to its natural state.
  1. Instant Energy Boost – Flushing out the lymphatic system not only reduces swelling, it detoxifies the body and flushes out that run-down, sluggish feeling. Scheduling a massage ahead of a busy summer weekend can keep you feeling energized to power through your favorite activities.
  1. Relief from Sunburns – Topical oils or creams can provide temporary yet immediate relief when skin is feeling warm and tender. Aloe vera has been used as a natural burn remedy for thousands of years and provides a cooling sensation when used during a massage. Other mild oils such as jojoba oil can also provide relief.
  1. Reduced Blood Pressure – When muscles become stagnant from lack of exercise or movement, naturally occurring toxins have no where to go. They begin to build up and your tissues start to become inflamed. If blood can’t reach the tissue, your already hard-working heart is forced to pump harder in an effort to get those vital nutrients and oxygen where needed. In combination with heightened cortisol levels from stress, blood pressure can become dangerously high. Massage therapy releases contracted muscles which helps increase circulation, allowing blood to flow more freely throughout the circulatory system. Monitoring your blood pressure is important during the summer months but something to be aware of all year round as well.
  1. Helps Reduce Cellulite & Wrinkles – While massage won’t completely turn back the hands of time, it can help diminish the appearance of cellulite and wrinkles. Massage encourages cell growth and can boost collagen production and can also prevent further deterioration of the tissue.

So before you skip your summer massage massage, consider these five benefits so you can have your best summer yet. Click here or call 330-721-9357 to schedule an appointment.

Five Reasons Your Dad Deserves A Massage

Massage therapy has a long history of benefits and extends far beyond just a relaxing day at the spa. Whether it is relief from pain, increase in circulation, mental health issues, or even to promote anti-aging, massage therapy can have a positive impact on many different facets of ones health. Yet, often times massage therapy seems to be geared more towards women or women’s health issues when in fact, massage therapy can have equal benefits on men’s health as well.

At Nature’s Touch, we are putting the emphasis back on men to show that massage therapy can have equally positive health benefits. More and more men are finding therapeutic massage alleviates their stress, sore muscles, and promotes a sense of relaxation.

Father’s Day is the perfect time for us to start Dad’s summer off right! Check out my top five reasons why your Dad, husband, or other special guy in your life deserves a massage:

Shoulder & Back Pain

With yard-work in full force and the golf clubs dusted off, Dad’s body may be feeling a little tight, overworked and sore. His muscles have been over used and overstretched!

Often times those small aches and pains begin to feel normal because they are manageable,  but living in that nagging discomfort is not normal! Massage therapy can ease the soreness in Dad’s back and especially around the shoulders where tightness is most common.

Heart Health

Diet and exercise are by far the best ways to maintain a healthy heart, but research has shown that incorporating regular therapeutic massage into a healthy lifestyle can benefit cardiovascular health.

Massage therapy can help reduce stress which in turn can help maintain a normal blood pressure. It also helps keep inflammation at bay, keeping us from having to take pain medications or other prescription pills that can have negative side effects.

Stress

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the best way to cope with stress is by taking care of your body, and we couldn’t agree more. When your body is physically healthy, it makes everything else easier.

We hold stress in our bodies in the form of muscle tightness. When muscles are tight, it’s not only uncomfortable, it causes a decrease in circulation which can trigger a chain reaction of problems. It can affect sleep patterns, cause headaches, anxiety, digestive issues, and ultimately weaken the immune system causing you to become sick more often.

Flexibility

Let’s face it, most of us live a very sedentary lifestyle. And for the Dad’s who work in an office-type setting or sit at a desk or drive a truck all day, you may hear them complain of stiffness or tightness when they try to get up and move.

As we age and move less, our joints tend to tighten, restricting range of motion. Kneading and working on muscles and joints can help keep them lubricated, more fluid, and working properly.

Energy

How often do you find your husband or Dad sleepily sipping coffee in the morning on his way to work? Or maybe your he enjoys a cold beer at night or is known to eat a wings and nachos every now and then. Whatever his vice is, he may be in need of a little detox. Our environment, the food we eat, and just normal wear-and-tear on the body build up toxins in our system and clog our elimination systems. These toxins can can lead to decreases in circulation, brain fog, and chronic fatigue.

Massage therapy can help reduce inflammation and promote an increase in circulation to allow fresh blood to easily flow throughout the body. When vital nutrients and oxygen are able to properly nourish our cells, our energy naturally increases.

Massage is a valuable form of therapeutic relief and offers several health benefits. There are also many different types of massage. Whether dad is looking for a Deep Tissue or Sports Massage, or he just wants a Swedish or Relaxation Massage, the therapists at Nature’s Touch will be sure to match him with the massage session that meets his needs.

Prenatal Massage: How Massage Therapy Can Help Support A Healthy Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a time of major change in the body as it adapts to growing a new
life from within. Massage is an excellent way to relax, increase energy and relieve the discomforts of pregnancy. The caring touch of our massage therapists can help expectant mothers accept these changes in a positive way.

What Can I Expect During My Session?

During your session, you and your growing belly will be comfortably supported with pillows or cushions. Your massage therapist will talk with you and listen to where you are feeling tension in your body. Careful and thoughtful techniques will be performed for relieve the stress you are feeling, increase circulation, and allow you to unwind and relax.

Essential Oils & Pregnancy

Aromatherapy and the use of essential oils is becoming a popular component in prenatal care. The main benefits of Aromatherapy use during pregnancy are relief of tension and stress, relaxation, relief from minor ailments and may be used in breathing practice for labor. Essential oils and a supportive massage therapist can also offer emotional support to the client and her family. Essential oils can be applied through massage, diffusion, compress and used after your session in a bath.

While there are many benefits of essential oils, certain precautions should be taken before you begin use. Make sure the essential oils you are considering are of a high quality. True therapeutic essential oils present very little hazard compared to synthetic blends. Make sure the chemical composition is not too strong for use during pregnancy because skin is more delicate at this time and some oils may cause irritation. Use of a carrier oil such as coconut oil is advised. Oils containing phenos are an example of a group that is NOT suitable for use during pregnancy so it’s best to stay away from: Oregano, Thyme, Clove, Cinnamon, Cumin, Aniseed, Fennel, Anise, Sweet Birch and Wintergreen.

While most pregnant clients will prefer the citrus-smelling oils, some safe options that can be used are: Bergamot, Black Pepper, Chamomile German, Chamomile Roman, Cypress, Eucalyptus, Frankincense, Geranium, Ginger, Grapefruit, Juniper, Lavender, Lemon, Marjoram Sweet, Neroli, Petitgrain, Rose Otto, Sandalwood, Sweet Orange, Tea Tree and Ylang Ylang.

Your therapist will always check with you before using any oils. When in doubt, always with your main prenatal care provider. Safe use of essential oils and your comfort are number one!

What Are The Benefits of Prenatal Massage?

While there are many benefits of receiving massage therapy during your pregnancy, a few of the top and most important ones are:

  • Reduces muscle cramps and painful trigger points
  • Relieves pain in the muscles and joints and legs, low back, and upper back
  • Increases flexibility, making it easier for the body to adjust to its changing shape
  • Eases constipation, gas, and heartburn
  • Improves circulation and reduces excess fluid retention
  • Slows the progress of varicose veins
  • Relieves headaches
  • Relieves stress and promotes relaxation

Additionally, massage greatly reduces anxiety and negative feelings. In recent studies from the Touch Research Institute at The University of Miami, they found that pregnant women who received one massage per week had lower levels of cortisol (the stress hormone) and increased levels of serotonin and dopamine (the feel-good hormones). Researchers have also linked these positive hormonal changes to fewer complications and healthier pregnancies overall.

Therapeutic massage is also great for the expectant Dad. A combination of deep muscle manipulation and tension relieving strokes will relax and calm the tension Dad feels during this time of emotional and physical change.

Is Prenatal Massage Right for Everyone?

Our massage therapists at Nature’s Touch are specifically trained in providing the most comfortable and effective prenatal massage sessions during normal, healthy pregnancy. We always encourage our prenatal clients to inform their caregivers that they are receiving pre or postnatal massages. Fight The Winter Blues With These Tips

Has winter got you down? Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that’s related to changes of the seasons with symptoms starting in the fall and continuing into the winter months. It’s often referred to as the “winter blues” and will zap your energy and make you feel moody. It can also lead to sleep problems caused by a disruption of the circadian rhythms (your body’s clock) due to reduced sunlight during the day. This also causes a drop in serotonin levels which are our mood boosters, and melatonin levels which help us to sleep. Another side effect can be food cravings, especially for sugar, which will increase our weight.

Research suggests that symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression may be positively affected with massage therapy. You can boost your mood and increase your serotonin and melatonin levels with regular massage therapy session. Studies show that massage:

o Reduces anxiety and depression with a course of care providing benefits similar in magnitude to those of psychotherapy.

o Increases neurotransmitters associated with lowering anxiety and decrease hormones associated with increasing anxiety.

o Significantly decreases heart rate, systolic blood pressure, and diastolic blood pressure.

o Massage has been shown to reduce depression in individuals with HIV, lessen anxiety in cancer patients, reduce anxiety and depression in military veterans and lower work-related stress for nurses.

Aromatherapy can be used during your massage and is also helpful in controlling the symptoms of SAD. Smells from essential oils can stimulate positive emotions by affecting our limbic system. The essential oils that treat the symptoms of SAD best include Basil, Orange, Sandalwood, Lemon, Jasmine, Sage, Chamomile, and Peppermint.

For those dreading the remaining winter months, don’t wait to take control of your symptoms. Schedule your next massage at Nature’s Touch Wellness Center, LLC now!

How Massage Therapy Supports Post-Operative Rehabilitation

The recovery process after surgery is equally important as the procedure itself and healing time is a critical challenge to ensure its
success. Because surgery is essentially unnatural, your body may respond either positively, accepting and easily moving on, or negatively, leading you down a bumpy and difficult road. But either way, patients are usually left in exceptional amounts of pain once sedatives or pain medications have worn off. Luckily, there are natural methods to reduce the burden of surgery and support your body’s innate ability to heal during the post-operative rehabilitation process. The best and most effective method is massage therapy.

Many studies have been done to show the amazing benefits of massage after surgery. In a recent study conducted by the Samueli Institute, massage therapy was proven to reduce negative effects and significantly help patients and reduce recovery time. Let’s explore why…

Most people are still in inconsiderable amounts of pain once they begin rehab. While it may be tempting to continue to take prescription pain medications, popping pills won’t offer a solution to the pain. It will rather mask the pain until the medication wears off and its time to take more. Massage offers a natural and longer lasting solution.

Massaging and kneading different muscles and areas of the body helps to increase circulation, allowing fresh blood and oxygen to flow to the injured areas. This process sends vital nutrients to those areas that may have been blocked to help restore and strengthen healthy muscles and tissue while reducing inflammation – ultimately resulting in less pain.

Increasing circulation can also lessen the chances scar tissue will form around the injury site. One of the most beneficial applications of recovery from surgical procedures is cupping therapy. Physicians are amazed at the speed and total recovery that their patients exhibit when cupping is used to complement their surgical work. Patients with extreme burns and deep abdominal scars, such as C-sections, can benefit from this therapy. Cupping can loosen and soften rigid tissue, no matter how old the scar is.

Surgery-related pain can not only cause immediate discomfort, but it can also lead to problems in other areas of patients’ lives. It can lead to disrupted sleep, negatively affect mood, and interfere with living a normal life. All these factors can lead to stress and anxiety, further delaying the healing process and putting additional burdens on the body.

If we are in a state of stress, we hold these emotions inside, often resulting in tightness in our muscles. Massage therapy releases this tension from the body creating a sense of calm and reducing anxiety. It is also just a wonderful way to relax and meditate. Having any type of procedure – big or small – can take a huge toll on your mind and your spirit. Taking time to reflect on your body and its abilities to heal will support a move peaceful and enjoyable recovery process.

If you have recently had surgery or have one scheduled in the near future, reach out to your favorite massage therapist and see how they can help you.

A Steamy Secret to Better Health

For centuries, steam has been used by healers of all kinds for its health and beauty benefits. From sweat lodges to saunas, the power of steam is undeniably effective. Whether you are seeking relief from nagging symptoms like muscle soreness or inflammation or simply just looking for a new method of relaxation, steam tent therapy is the solution you have been looking for.

What is Steam Tent Therapy?

Steam tent therapy is like a relaxing sauna. While laying comfortably on a massage table, a tent-like dome is secured around you and sealed with Velcro. To avoid overheating or dizziness, your head remains outside the tent and a cool wrap is draped around your neck to promote an enjoyable experience. With a flip of a switch, warm steam fills the tent and within just a few minutes, you are engulfed in an even distribution of pleasant heat.

Sessions are completely private in the comfort of one of our massage rooms and usually last anywhere from 10-30 minutes.

When Should You Steam?

Steam tent therapy is a perfect follow-up to a massage because it helps the body sweat out toxins released during the session. We recommend combining regular steaming session in tandem with your routine massages in order to get the full benefits of these two therapies.

Health Benefits of Steam Tent Therapy

Boosted Immunity

The heat from a steam tent raises the body’s core temperature putting the body in an induced fever-like state. The elevated temperature signals the body to create white blood cells, producing antibodies that spring into action and fight off any unwanted invaders.

As you lay in the steam tent and begin to sweat, the increase in white blood cells will help support the body’s natural detoxification systems, expelling hidden toxins through the skin. The fewer toxins the body has to process, the healthier your immune system will be!

Reduced Inflammation & Muscle Soreness

Steam therapy is a fantastic form of treatment for those suffering from inflammation and pain. While it’s not a cure for these conditions, it has been proven to reduce symptoms and help alleviate discomfort.

As heat penetrates your muscles and joints, your capillaries dilate, increasing oxygen saturation within the tissues. Muscles become more pliable and relaxed helping to increase mobility, reduce stiffness, and minimize inflammation. Plus, it makes your muscles just feel good!

Detoxification

With over 82,000 known chemicals in the environment, we are exposed to more toxins than our bodies are designed to handle. And when those toxins start to build up, disease and dysfunction start to set in. Since our skin is the largest organ in the body, it makes sense that sweating is a fantastic means of detoxification.

As we stated before, steam tent therapy helps support the immune system in combination with massage therapy sessions. Although we do recommend these two therapies work in tandem, sessions can also be offered as a standalone method to detox. Treatments offer a comfortable and relaxing way to open up your pores and encourage your sweat glands to excrete waste, promoting an overall sense of health and well-being.

In Conclusion: Everyone Should Steam!

Aside from these fabulous benefits, many people who steam regularly report they notice significant improvement in congestion, headaches, and improved sleep, just to name a few. The benefits are truly unbeatable! Anyone can benefit from the healing powers of this ancient method.
