Why Moms Should Take A Field Trip Too

By now, your back-to-school schedule is in full swing. You’re probably already used to the standard head-spinning schedule of sports practices, extra-curriculars, and playdates. But while planning for your kids next school activity, why not schedule one of your own?

Here at Nature’s Touch, we’re encouraging all moms (and dads too!) to take an hour break from the busy school season and take a “field trip” to our office. While a regular massage is always divine, we also have many other treatments that require about the same amount of time and provide a deeper level of  relaxation.

Check out these treatments to pamper yourself:

Bamboo Infusion Massage

Bamboo Infusion Massage is a unique method of deep tissue massage. Using heated bamboo to roll and knead tissue, this treatment creates an extreme sensation of relaxation. The smooth edges of the bamboo sticks allow for more penetrating maneuvers to work through all angles of your aches and pains. Many clients report that the benefits of this type of treatment last even longer than regular deep tissue massage. How wonderful does that sound!

Hot Stone Massage

This treatment is performed with the application of smooth basalt lava stones that have been heated to just the right temperature needed to melt your tension away. Stones are placed in areas that generally hold tension such as the back, and then oiled stones are used in flowing strokes to relax the body. This type of treatment is warm and cozy and great for warming up as the seasons begin to change.

Steam Tent Therapy

As the weather starts to cool down, you may be finding yourself more prone to catching colds and getting sick. And as a busy parent, there is no time for that. The perfect way to give your immune system a boost and warm up from the chilly weather is with a session in our steam tent. The steam tent is like a relaxing sauna that helps the body to sweat out toxins. As it heats the body, it acts as an artificial fever that kills off unwanted invaders and puts your body into healing-mode. Many people who incorporate regular steam tent sessions into their life notice significant improvement in congestion, headaches and difficulty sleeping.

Rain Bath Ceremony

This hundreds-of-years-old sacred ceremony bathes you in warm stones, cool stones and essential oils. This ancient healing treatment is a very gentle method of alleviating stress and anxiety, helping to restore balance to the body’s chemistry. Warm stones relax and calm. Essential oils are dripped onto the body to ground, re-balance and soothe. Cool stones revitalize the body, mind and spirit to reawaken to a new self.

Facial Toning Massage

Face Toning Massage is a stimulating, vigorous, luxurious, safe and effective method of treating the problem of sluggish, aging and environmentally damaged skin. This method will retrain your facial muscles by firming and lifting them, thereby tightening and toning the skin, especially around the eyes and mouth to create a youth flow. Facial massage is also relaxing, which promotes stress reduction. Clients experience enhanced muscle tone and noticeable improvements to their skin, face and neck with the very first treatment. You’ll absolutely love how your skin and muscles look after a series. Many clients look like they lost five to 10 years off their faces, and are ecstatic.

5 Reasons To Get A Massage This Summer

Aside from feeling great, there are many benefits to massage therapy that can improve your overall health and well-being. During the summer months, we find that people generally feel better and in turn, forgo their regular appointments. But what people tend to forget is that maintaining your health is a year-round effort. To prove it, here are five reasons why you should get a massage this summer:

  1. Reduced Swelling – We are all too familiar with disappearing ankles and sausage fingers during the hot summer months. This swelling occurs when excess fluid and metabolic waste build up in the body. In the heat, blood vessels expand allowing fluid to rush to the surrounding tissue. The gentle pressure and deep strokes from massage encourages oxygen and nutrients back in our cells to restore the tissue to its natural state.
  1. Instant Energy Boost – Flushing out the lymphatic system not only reduces swelling, it detoxifies the body and flushes out that run-down, sluggish feeling. Scheduling a massage ahead of a busy summer weekend can keep you feeling energized to power through your favorite activities.
  1. Relief from Sunburns – Topical oils or creams can provide temporary yet immediate relief when skin is feeling warm and tender. Aloe vera has been used as a natural burn remedy for thousands of years and provides a cooling sensation when used during a massage. Other mild oils such as jojoba oil can also provide relief.
  1. Reduced Blood Pressure – When muscles become stagnant from lack of exercise or movement, naturally occurring toxins have no where to go. They begin to build up and your tissues start to become inflamed. If blood can’t reach the tissue, your already hard-working heart is forced to pump harder in an effort to get those vital nutrients and oxygen where needed. In combination with heightened cortisol levels from stress, blood pressure can become dangerously high. Massage therapy releases contracted muscles which helps increase circulation, allowing blood to flow more freely throughout the circulatory system. Monitoring your blood pressure is important during the summer months but something to be aware of all year round as well.
  1. Helps Reduce Cellulite & Wrinkles – While massage won’t completely turn back the hands of time, it can help diminish the appearance of cellulite and wrinkles. Massage encourages cell growth and can boost collagen production and can also prevent further deterioration of the tissue.

So before you skip your summer massage massage, consider these five benefits so you can have your best summer yet. Click here or call 330-721-9357 to schedule an appointment.

Cupping: Alternative Medicine for Pain and Chronic Conditions

Cupping TherapyMassage therapy and body work can help a number of physical conditions. However, old injuries or repetitive, strenuous movements can hinder the body’s ability to heal through normal massage practices. Cupping, or sometimes referred to as manual vacuum therapy, is a natural, holistic, and effective technique that takes pressure off the injured site and promotes healing in the body.

What Is Cupping?

When a muscle is injured, the body’s natural response mechanism is to create inflammation to protect the area. For example, if you were to cut your finger, the inflammatory process can help block infection or bacteria from entering your skin while the area heals. On the flip side, chronic inflammation can be damaging to your health. Inflammation around an injured muscle can produce free radicals or toxins overtime and create an acidic pH in the body.

Cupping can change this acidic state and release the toxins in an injured area. The process can almost be thought of as the opposite of a massage. Rather than applying pressure to work through the injury, cupping creates a suction to take the pressure off the area to allow the stagnant blood to release and oxygen to move through.

How Does It Work?

Cupping uses small glass cups that are placed on the skin to create a suction. The cups are typically in place for several minutes depending on the level of severity of your symptoms. Another form of cupping using a small flexible, silicone cup that can be moved around the area by the therapist to create a massage-like effect. Both forms force blood to move from the area, pushing toxins out, and flushing oxygen and nutrients in to stimulate healing.

Is Cupping Right For Me?

Cupping is a safe therapy that can be incorporated into your regular massage routine. At Nature’s Touch, we have four certified cupping therapists highly skilled in practicing this technique.

Conditions cupping can treat:

  • Chronic pain
  • Joint pain
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Arthritis
  • Skin conditions
  • High blood pressure
  • Cellulite
  • And more…

Massage Therapy for Sunburns

A common misconception I often hear during the summer months is that if you have a sunburn, you should cancel your routine massage appointment. However, massage therapy can be a beneficial component to your body’s healing process and even speed up your skin’s ability to repair itself.

So before you cancel your appointment, consider these benefits.

  • Increased Circulation– massage therapy improves circulation by pushing blood through congested areas of the body while releasing toxins. This opens up pathways so vital nutrients and oxygen can make their way to the injured site
  • Immediate Relief– topical oils or creams can provide temporary yet immediate relief when skin is feeling warm and tender. Aloe vera has been used as a natural burn remedy for thousands of years. Other mild oils such as jojoba oil can also provide relief. Keeping sunburned skin moisturized helps the burned area stay hydrated and supple and will minimize damage
  • Natural Healing– regular massage therapy promotes overall health and wellness. A healthy body is able to heal faster and more efficiently than someone who isn’t taking care of themselves

When To Avoid A Massage

There are different levels of severity to sunburns. If your sunburn is painful to the touch, inflamed, or otherwise irritated, your skin may need some time before it is worked on. However, talk to your massage therapist about your symptoms before canceling your appointment. There are other treatment options available if you are unable to get your normal massage. Having non-affected areas of the body worked on can help relieve some of the stress your body is going through. Treatments such as Reflexology increases circulation and can stimulate the nervous system to promote a faster healing time.

Reiki is another option that can accelerate healing through the laying of hands on different areas of the body. This ancient form of natural healing restores imbalances of energy due to physical or emotional blockages and promotes an overall position feeling of well-being.

So before you postpone your appointment, consider how massage therapy can help restore your damaged skin. Give our office a call at 330-721-9357 or schedule your next appointment here.

Massage Therapy For Children

Whenever we talk about massage, we generally associate it with adults only. But the healing and relaxing benefits don’t only apply to the older generation. People of all ages can benefit from massage therapy, including children.

Why It Works

It’s no mistake that infant or child massage routines have been practiced since ancient times. The power of touch and sensory stimulation is the first sense felt by humans and has shown to help children reach developmental milestones. Sadly, there have been studies revealing babies suffer from “failure to thrive” because they were deprived of the loving touch they desperately need.

You may not realize it, but children of all ages experience different kinds of stress. Stress in children can range from separation anxiety, various fears, or emotional strain within the family. These heightened levels of cortisol so early on hinders healthy development. Massage therapy can help children manage these feelings of stress in a controlled and positive setting.

In addition to helping children manage stress, massage therapy early in life supports a positive sense of self. Children who learn a healthy understanding of touch early on are more likely to grow to be adults with a healthy self-esteem, a sense of appropriate boundary’s, and long-lasting intimate relationships.[1]

The Power of Touch

I once worked with a family that adopted three children who hadn’t come from a positive environment. I visited them at their new home once a week, same day, same time so that they’d get used to having a “friend” that would always came back and who wasn’t going to leave them. I would bring with me creams and oils and for them to make up their own aromatherapy potions and then massage their new parent’s feet or hands. It was an emotionally charged time and the little boy told his new mom that he loved her for the first time during one of our sessions.

We also asked another one of our young friends (age four) how it felt when her mom gave her a massage. She said every night before bed, her mom rubs her back and sometimes uses lotion. “It makes me feel comfy and snuggly! I like it when mommy tickles my arms too.” And coming from mom, she says it’s the best way to help her little one fall soundly asleep.

Daily massage with your kiddo does not have to complicated. A quick 10 to 15 session with your child’s favorite scented lotion or oil is just enough to have lasting benefits. This step by step guide can help you master the perfect technique for you and your little one.

What We Do

We offer private sessions designed to teach parents or caregivers how to massage their medically stable newborn and are available  to answer questions regarding the best ways to massage older children. As always, we strive to be a resource to support you in anyway we can.

Healthy Prenatal and Postpartum Techniques

Throughout my many years as a Birthing Doula, Reiki Master, and massage therapist, I’ve seen how natural body-work techniques promote a healthy pregnancy, safe labor and delivery, and easy transition into the postpartum phase. Simple treatments like massage therapy or special chiropractic adjustments can have exceptional benefits for both the mother and the child.

Massage Therapy

With so many major changes happening to the body, massage can help relieve the physical and emotional discomforts that take place.

Some of the physical benefits include:

  • Reduced muscle cramps and painful trigger points
  • Pain relief in muscles and joints and legs, low back, and upper back
  • Increased flexibility, making it easier for the body to adjust to its changing shape
  • Eases constipation, gas, and heartburn
  • Improved circulation and reduces excess fluid retention
  • Slowed progression of varicose veins
  • Relief of headaches

According to a study from the Touch Research Institute at The University of Miami, massage greatly reduces anxiety and negative feelings and can have a positive impact on an expectant mother’s mental-state. The study found that pregnant women who received one massage per week had lower levels of cortisol (the stress hormone) and increased levels of serotonin and dopamine (the feel-good hormones). These positive hormonal changes have been linked to few complications and healthier pregnancies overall.

For more information on how massage therapy can benefit you during pregnancy, read my article here.

Chiropractic Care

Regular chiropractic care during pregnancy can help ensure your body is structurally prepared for labor and delivery. When the pelvis is out of alignment, it can reduce the amount of room the baby needs to develop in the womb or lead to complications during delivery. Adjustments also support optimal nervous system function, ensuring your cells are receiving adequate nutrients and oxygen for the growing baby.

Other benefits of regular chiropractic care during pregnancy include:

  • Relief from back and neck pain
  • Reduced swelling
  • Controlled symptoms of nausea
  • Reduced labor and delivery time

No matter how great your prenatal care may be, sometimes the baby doesn’t want to cooperate.

Breech or posterior positions can also interfere with labor and delivery and could lead to alternative interventions such as c-sections. The Webster technique is a specific type of chiropractic care that focuses on taking un-needed stress off the uterus and supporting muscles to create optimal balance in the pelvis. Chiropractors are highly trained in these techniques to provide gentle and safe adjustments to encourage the baby to move into the right position.

Once a mother has her child, changes in the body don’t stop there. Postpartum discomfort can be just as intense. Combined with massage therapy, chiropractic care can help shorten recovery time and address all the components of one’s pain to help your body back to normal.

Work With A Doula

A Doula is a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to a mother before, during, and shortly after childbirth to help her achieve the healthiest, most satisfying experience possible.

The term comes from a Greek word meaning “to serve.” Birth doulas serve and support expectant women and their partners and families with the emotional and physical aspects of childbirth. A doula’s role fits perfectly into the modern childbirth scheme where health care providers cannot be 100% present to care for a woman’s emotional and physical needs during childbirth.  Postpartum doulas serve and support after childbirth. Both birth and postpartum doulas can assist women and their families in getting information to make the very best health care decisions for themselves and their families.

According to DONA International, the following are benefits of having a Doula:

  • Mother’s are less likely to need Pitocin
  • Less likely to have a cesarean birth
  • Less likely to use pain medication
  • More likely to have a positive childbirth experience

The Secret to a Perfect Golf Game

Golf – a favorite past-time enjoyed by many. However, it’s a difficult game to master. If you’ve ever played, you know how frustrating the game can be. Half physical and half psychological, the focus and precision required to get that small white ball across hundreds of yards into a tiny hole can be excruciating. Yet if you do so in a minimal amount of strokes, the feeling of success can be oh so rewarding.

While it’s not the most physically demanding of sports, it does put quite a bit of stress on the body. Swinging a club hard and fast with an intense twisting motion will pack quite a punch on your muscles and joints. In fact, Golf Digest reports that around 80 percent of golfers experience some kind of back or shoulder pain.

Thankfully, massage therapy offers a number of solutions to golfers looking to maintain their swing. And while the physical aspect of golf is important, the psychological component is also critical.

Reduce Pain

It may sound like common sense but it is ever so important. No one wants to live in pain! Massage therapy is one of the best ways to ease the soreness of overworked muscles and joints. It increases circulation, allowing the required oxygen and nutrients to flow through the tissue and maintain muscle health.

Increase Range of Motion

As we age and move less, our joints begin to tighten, restricting movement. Kneading and working on muscles and joints can help keep them lubricated, more fluid, and working properly.

Decrease Risk of Injury

The hard swing and twisting motion from a golf swing is a very unnatural movement. It’s intense, vigorous, and strenuous. Even a healthy individual is at risk for injury. Keeping muscles loose and flexible is the key to preventing a tear or strain.

Promote Mental Clarity

Massage therapy is a great way to relax, but for many the sense of calm wears off shortly after a session. You get back to your busy life and let stress sink in again. Reiki is another natural healing technique that can benefit you beyond the treatment room. It is an ancient Tibetan form of natural healing that is administered by the “laying of hands” to help restore imbalances of energy in the body due to blockages. This technique increases energy, accelerates healing, calms the mind, stimulates spiritual awareness, and creates a general feeling a well-being.

Practicing Reiki is especially important when looking to balance the chakras of the body. When we see clients with physical ailments, whether it be pain, migraines, digestive issues, etc., we can often times relate it back to a blockage in one or more of the chakras from an emotional trauma. As a Reiki Master, we can help people identify where these blockages are located and clear them to allow the body to once again become centered.

If practiced regularly, you can see how these positive effects can transfer over to your golf game.

Boost Confidence

Golf is a competitive sport, but it is also meant to be a means of enjoyment. Whether you are playing with a group or solo, it’s supposed to be fun! Heading out with a sense of relaxation and clarity can take the stress off trying to play perfectly. Our goal is to help you take a deep breath, smell the fresh air, and appreciate your physical health and ability to move.

Now as you can see, I don’t exactly have the secret to a perfect golf game but I know that massage therapy and Reiki can help you get pretty close. Everyone’s body and skill level are different, but maintaining a healthy physique and clear mind will help you play your best game yet.

If you play golf and are looking to improve your game, give us a call or click here to schedule your appointment today.

Raising Awareness on Heart Health: Why massage therapy can help save your life

Heart disease is now the number one leading cause of death in both men and women in the United States, resulting in over 610,000 deaths every year.[1] Because February is National Heart Month, we can’t help but wonder why these statistics are so staggering. What can we do to help raise awareness?

Biologically, we all know what the heart is and it’s functions. It is an organ the size of a fist, located behind the breastbone just left of center. It pumps blood throughout the body through the circulatory system, supplying oxygen and nutrients to tissue. Aside from the brain (your command center) the heart is the center of the body, giving life to every inch of your physical self.

Spiritually, the heart is the center of your entire being. Known as the fourth chakra, it is purposely situated in the middle of the body, balancing the lower three chakras of world matter and the upper three chakras of the spirit. When it’s open, it colors your life with compassion, love, beauty, and acceptance of self. When closed, it’s said to give way to anger, resentment, grief, and hatred.

Whether you are a spiritual person or not, it’s clear that the state in which your heart is functioning will impact your overall health. Obviously, there are many factors that affect this (diet, exercise, medications), but more and more studies are showing that simple lifestyle changes can have a dramatically positive impact—massage therapy being one of them.

  • The biggest way massage therapy supports a healthy heart is by reducing stress. It’s relaxing, peaceful, and gives you time to rest. Many people meditate and reflect during their sessions or rather just quiet the mind and enjoy the stillness. Stress increases cortisol levels telling the heart and other organs to work harder. Massage therapy can actual inhibit these hormones from being produced and instead replace them with feel-good hormones known as endorphins.
  • When muscles become stagnant from lack of exercise or movement, naturally occurring toxins have no where to go. They begin to build up and your tissues start to become inflamed. If blood can’t reach the tissue, your already hard-working heart is forced to pump harder in an effort to get those vital nutrients and oxygen where needed. Before you know it, you can have dangerously high blood pressure. Massage therapy releases contracted muscles which helps increase circulation, allowing blood to flow more freely throughout the circulatory system.
  • Massage therapy also plays a vital role in the rehabilitation of those who have had operations on their heart or are going through other cardiovascular procedures. Surgery related pain can lead to disrupted sleep, negatively affect mood, and interfere with living a normal life. All these factors can lead to stress and anxiety, further delaying the healing process and putting additional burdens on the body. Recent studies have shown that incorporating massage into cardiac surgery patients’ post-operative rehabilitation can significantly reduce pain, anxiety, and muscular tension while improving relaxation and satisfaction.[2]

Here at Nature’s Touch, our clients’ health and happiness is our top priority. We hope that talking about issues such as cardiovascular health will encourage or inspire you to practice positive lifestyle choices.

Massage therapy is a simple, drug-free, and non-invasive treatment that could change your life! Call us today to schedule your appointment.

Massage Therapy & Weight Loss: Committing To Love Yourself

It’s no secret that self-improvement is a shared interest among Americans. Now that January is in full-swing, the discussion of New Year’s Resolutions seems to be on everyone’s mind. Whether it’s weight loss, cutting back on the sugar, or finally utilizing that gym membership, it appears that these resolutions are oftentimes focused on superficial, high-pressure goals revolving around body image.

Here at Nature’s Touch, we advise our clients to make New Year’s Resolutions with extreme caution. Why, you may ask? The reason isn’t because we don’t have faith in our clients, but rather we know what the implications may be if those resolutions don’t come to fruition. Not succeeding in those weight loss goals or achieving the perfect makeover can lead to frustration, lowered self-esteem, or even depression.

That’s a lot of pressure! Instead of making a promise you might not be able to keep, why not take a minimalistic approach that actually works?

The solution is simple. Make a commitment to loving yourself, each and everyday. If your goal in this new year is to work on self-improvement, staring at a fitness magazine or listening to ads claiming you can drop 20 pounds in two weeks just aren’t realistic. Why not work on improving your body image, self-esteem, and focus on what works for you.

To help you start this journey of self-love, I have put together three tips that I practice as daily reminders to love the body I was blessed with. When you love yourself, you’ll start doing things to care for your health and wellbeing, and weight (if that’s your goal) will begin to fall off naturally.

  • Recite Daily Affirmations
    • It may feel silly at first, but tell yourself how much you love YOU! You think your thighs are too big? That’s ok, they give you strength to walk around. Feeling pressure that your house isn’t always clean? Tell yourself how wonderful you are for providing a roof over your family’s head. Consciously turn the negatives in your life into positives. This change in mindset can have a huge impact on your overall outlook on life.
  • Practice Meditation
    • I talk about meditation a lot in my office, but that’s because I believe so deeply in its power. Taking 15 minutes out of the day to sit quietly and peacefully can calm the mind and can help you refocus, recharge, and reconnect with yourself. It’s inexpensive, simple, and can be done anywhere! Meditation is something I suggest anyone of any walk of life practice.
  • Find Your Passion
    • One of the reasons why New Year’s Resolutions crumble to quickly is because we commit to something unrealistic. While wanting to try new things is certainly advantageous, purchasing a CrossFit membership when you’re really not interested in doing such a high-intensity sport won’t do you much good. Instead, really consider something your heart has been yearning to do but still fits in your life. An activity such as taking a dance class, trying yoga, or working with a massage therapist to understand your body on a deeper level. Whatever it may be, find something that you can be passionate about that really focuses on YOU.

Promoting self-love is the first step in becoming the best version of you. While massage therapy is our main service offering, we also do our best to guide you as you make this new commitment. We spend time talking to our clients when they come in to make them feel comfortable. No matter what shape or size you may be, there is no judgement.

If you are ready to commit to becoming the healthiest and happiest version of you and making this year your best year yet, click here or call our office at 330-721-9357. We look forward to seeing you.

My Tonalli Healing Ritual Experience

While in Mexico this past week I visited the local spa to receive a traditional healing ritual called Tonalli. In the Aztec wisdom, Tonalli means “luminous essence,” from the belief that the breath of life is the essence that brings One love, One energy, One purifying light to all living things our One world. In reverence to this tradition, the Tonalli ritual awakens the One purifying light in your body through successive steps of cleansing.

My therapist’s name was Rosa and she thoughtfully walked me through the treatments and explained each step. With her soothing voice, she guided me through a short meditation to bring One love to myself. She indicated that One love begins with loving yourself, and she is so correct.

With my hands over my heart I listened to her voice which lulled me to a calm place. Next, with dried herbs in hand, Rosa cleansed my aura (our energy field that surrounds us). I sat and she placed my feet into a bowl of warmed water while she scrubbed and then dried them. When she was finished, I laid on the warm massage table and was surrounded by a warm herbal body wrap with the intention that your body absorbs nature’s light and life. With firm pressure, she massaged my scalp and used a trigger point massage technique on my face. The wrap was removed and followed by the use of obsidian stones. These stones contain anti-inflammatory powers when gently massaged over the body. Rosa used the stones on my tight muscles to rebalance my body’s energetic flow.

The combination of these healing properties of the stone, massage movements and heat delivered a healing experience that cleanses the spirit and energizes the body and mind.

I’m sharing this experience with you because this day in the spa was the perfect example of taking time out of my busy life to show my body, mind, and spirit some self-care. We talk about the importance of taking care of your self all time at Nature’s Touch but we all know it’s easier said than done. I always like to think of it this way, how can you fully take care of others – whether it’s your spouse, children, an elderly parent, or friend – if you aren’t healthy and happy and fully capable in the first place?

Not everyone will has the availability to utilize a spa in Mexico, but there are so many ways you bring a little bit of this Tonalli experience to your home. Meditate, kick your feet up, get a massage! Anything to help you relax, get centered, and de-stress. Your body will thank you later.
